The Reinvestment Fund
Stryker Farm
Two-film set — a farm and a city
The ask
The Reinvestment Fund backs small enterprises that conventional lenders overlook. Individually the loans are modest; together they remake neighbourhoods. They wanted donors and partners to feel that aggregate effect somewhere specific.
What we did
Rather than explain the fund, we spent a day with one of its borrowers and filmed the actual work. The fund never appears on camera. The case is made by the farm existing, and by the people who get up to run it. A companion film travels to a Baltimore neighbourhood the fund helped grow, so the same argument — modest loans, collective effect — lands in a city as plainly as it does on a farm.

Farming to me is like a lifestyle. When you run a farm, it's pretty much your life. I wanted to do something for a living that I wouldn't feel like I needed a vacation. I wouldn't feel like I needed a weekend when I was in school. It just felt like every week was a race till Friday, and I didn't want to go through that my entire life. I wanted to to do something that was fulfilling and rewarding and and that's what farming has been for me.
Modern day farms. Their goal is to produce meat as cheaply as possible. And they do that and they do it very well. But that's not for me, and I don't think I would enjoy that type of farming lifestyle. The animals are stressed. It makes use as the farmers stressed. I feel the way that I farm when the animals are content, you're content.
And that's what I like about my style of pasture based livestock farming. You know, we only raise as much as our land can support. We have a limit to what we can produce here. And and we stick to that. We don't degrade the land. We we try to improve the land. So I think it's I think it's very important that there's these small, independent family farms around because what we provide is an option away from the industrial food system. The only way that we can compete is by providing a better quality product. We can't necessarily compete with price with with a grocery store, but we can produce a better quality product, and that's what we do.
