We had a big choice to make. And coming to the East Coast, in which city and which place we should actually go. And basically the choice for us was we can move to New York and we can spend a lot of money on a really small apartment, have no equipment, or we can move an hour and a half away from New York to Philadelphia. We can afford a pretty large studio space for the kind of processes and things that we do.

We made the choice that Philadelphia was going to be the way to go. We visited Globe Dye Works and saw the space. We knew that it was the right time to make the move. The building is becoming, I think, this kind of complex of artists and creative people that all are kind of feeding off of each other. You can kind of walk around from the studio of the studio and see what people are doing, and they just had a big sculpture show here, and they got a couple other shows, and there's not a lot of places that are this free or open to have those kind of things happen.

Our kind of dream was to have these shops. I think it's absolutely integral to the work. I almost think the building and the area is completely crucial to the work itself as well. Not only the esthetic of the building and the way it looks and the way it feels, but also just knowing that there's people right on the outside of these walls that are fighting to make a living.

It makes you think about your own practice a lot.
